Perfect Meat For a Summer BBQ

Seattle! Do you like barbeques on a hot summer day? Of course you do. Well in addition to your watermelons, corns and chicken, I’m going to suggest you bring this with you to your next outdoor grill party; maybe even for July 4th.

Now I don’t know if other Metropolitan Markets have this, but in the meat deli section of the Met Mart near the UW and Seattle Children Hospital area, they sell something called a flank steak with kalbi marinade, about $16 per pound at the time of 6/17/19. I bought this steak on a whim for a friend’s midnight fire pit grill. I brought it out after it had been cooked and cut up and it was gone in about two minutes, keep in mind that this was a full pound slab of meat. Since then, I always bring it whenever a friend is hosting a grill-type event. Conversely, friends are always eagerly anticipating the steak whenever they see the packaging. Well, one friend in particular, but you can expect a crowd when it comes hot off the grill and it to be gone before you realize it.

What I can say about this steak, or rather what my friends tell me, is that this steak is both well-marinated and tender. If cooked properly, this steak has a great chewy texture as well as a saucy, Korean flavor that won’t taste to overpowering. It goes well with leaves of Romaine lettuce and/or onions that can be either raw or cooked and possibly even a bed of rice, although I have yet to try that method. On the other hand, you could do what my friends and I always do and just cut it up and eat by hand. That works too.

So if you are grocery shopping in the UW area, consider stopping by at the Metropolitan Market and buying their Flank Steak with Kalbi Marinade. Whether you bring it for a barbecue or for dinner with yourself, you will fall in love with the steak, unless you’re vegetarian, then sorry.
